wondering

What is most important and valuable about the home as a base for children's
growth into the world is not that it is a better school than the schools,
but that it isn't a school at all. - John Holt

home schooling
unschooling

i wish there was a better term for it

to include the word "school" means it will always be compared.
i don't want to compare what we do to school

we are living.
home learning....still doesn't work...aren't we always learning....

a friend of mine has said they are doing "organic domestic education"

thoughts?

hi -- i struggled with this for many years ... mine being educated in the world with home as their base --- they are now in "jr high" but we dont keep track of grades in the traditional way .... my family just refer to ourselves as unconventional learners -- we are life learners -- open spirits ... :) same as you

I like the phrase "Life Learning" or "Life Learners"...

All life is learning, we just happen to do some of it at home. I've been thinking of you a lot lately and wanting to talk with you about some of this stuff. I will try to dig up your phone number and call soon!

autumn mama - mostly i want a new response to stragers when we are out and the ask "no school today kids?" know what i mean? also wondering - do you refer to Saturday and Sunday as the weekend and mon-fri as "school days"? I am guiltly of that...it does really take years to find your true grove with it all! we are life learners for sure!

@ Cecila -- i don't refer to school days or weekends- but i do so intentionally... i truly believe in waldorf/ home learning --and the complete and whole child education they get at home. So my children know that everyday they are open to learning something... the excitement is in not knowing what life learning with occur that day .... When we are asked about school days when we are out -- i simply say -- we are home educated and i do so with a bit of excitement in my voice -- to indicate what a positive experience it is ...sometimes it isn't the wording we use but the energy in which it is delivered...so my positive tone usually sparks a conversation about what home learning looks like for us -- i usually simplify if for people by saying that we meet requirements through experiential learning and life experience rather than in a class with walls ... you'll find your groove ... you sound like you are a positive loving homelearning mama ... light and magic to all of you ... hugs :)
